Choosing a makeup mirror

A makeup mirror is judged on one thing: whether the face you see at the mirror is the face other people see in daylight. That comes down to light, not looks.

Get the light right

Two numbers decide this. CRI (colour rendering index) is how accurately the light shows colour — under CRI 80 light, foundation that looks matched at the mirror can read orange or ashy outside. Every mirror here is CRI 90+, the same standard used in studio lighting. Colour temperature decides the mood: natural white (around 4500K) is the honest one for applying makeup; warm white is softer and kinder but will hide mistakes. If you do makeup for both daytime and evenings out, choose a multi-mode mirror and switch.

Flicker is the other thing. Cheap drivers pulse fast enough that you don't see it but slow enough that it shows up as banding when you film yourself. If you make content, that matters.

Front-lit, backlit, or bulbs?

• Front-lit — light faces you, so it fills shadows under the eyes and chin. The best choice if the mirror is mainly for makeup.
• Backlit (halo) — light glows behind the glass. Beautiful in a room, but it lights the wall more than your face. Better as a bathroom mirror than a makeup one.
• Hollywood bulbs — individual bulbs around the frame, the closest thing to a professional dressing-room setup, and the most even light on your face.

Size and placement

For a dressing table, you want to see your head and shoulders while seated — around 24"×30" is comfortable for most people, 18"×24" if the table is compact. Hang or stand it so the centre sits at seated eye level; a mirror mounted too high throws shadows down your face, which defeats the point.

Magnification

A 3X magnifying mirror alongside the main one is genuinely useful for brows, lashes and detail work. It's a supplement, not a replacement — you can't judge overall blending in a magnified mirror.
